Look on the coupler tube for the brand and model. Photograph it from the side and bottom. Most fit problems come from look-alike couplers, for example Bulldog BX1, which the GRB-78 does not fit.
What to look for
- Full enclosure of the coupler ball socket.
- Thick steel (Proven lists 1/4 in steel).
- Protected lock cylinder (puck lock or tubular).
- Keyed alike with your other locks.
Add a second layer
Gooseneck trailers often carry expensive equipment or livestock. A wheel lock and a GPS tracker are worth considering. See wheel locks.
Gooseneck coupler types at a glance
| Coupler style | How to recognise it | Lock approach |
|---|---|---|
| Bulldog / Ram style (round tube) | Brand cast or stamped on the tube; spring latch handle | Custom-fit steel lock (e.g. Proven GRB-78; not for Bulldog BX1) |
| Demco EZ Latch (4 in square) | Square tube with EZ Latch handle | Custom-fit lock for that coupler (e.g. Proven GDS) |
| Hammerblow, Stallion, Superior, T.E.M. | Brand plate on coupler | Bracket lock plus padlock (e.g. Blaylock TL-50) |
| Atwood and others | Check brand and model number | Use the maker's fit guide or send a photo before ordering |
Because gooseneck couplers vary so much, the safest buying step is to email the lock maker a photo. Proven and AMPLock both offer fit help on their sites.
Hitched vs unhitched
A gooseneck coupler lock protects the trailer when it is unhitched. When it is hitched to your truck, the gooseneck ball in the bed is the weak point; a pin or latch lock on the coupler handle stops someone releasing it at a fuel stop. Some owners also lock the bed ball or remove it when not towing.
Storage checklist for gooseneck trailers
- Fit the coupler lock every time the trailer is dropped, even for a short stop.
- Add a wheel lock on a visible outside wheel for multi-day storage.
- Lower the jack so the coupler sits low; it is harder to back a truck under.
- Photograph the VIN plate and keep serial numbers of equipment on board.
- Consider a hidden GPS tracker if the trailer carries machinery or livestock equipment.

- Is there a universal gooseneck lock?
- Not really; fit depends on coupler brand. Bracket-and-padlock designs like the Blaylock TL-50 cover several brands.
- Do 5th wheel and gooseneck locks differ?
- Yes. A 5th wheel uses a king pin lock; a gooseneck uses a coupler lock.
- How much does a gooseneck lock cost?
- Custom-fit steel models are roughly $250 to $300; bracket types cost less plus a padlock.
- Does the Proven GRB-78 fit Bulldog BX1?
- No. Proven states the GRB-78 is not compatible with Bulldog BX1 couplers.
