A coupler lock stops hitching, but a thief can still drag a trailer with a chain. A wheel lock stops the wheel turning, which makes towing slow, loud and obvious. That is why storage lots and owner forums often recommend both.
What to check
- Tire width and wheel diameter: measure both; clamp locks list a span range.
- Tandem axles: a trailer can still move on three wheels, so a lock that also blocks lug-nut removal is better.
- Rim protection: rubber-coated arms prevent scratches.
- Visibility: bright colours deter.
Placement tip
Fit the lock on the side facing the street or the driver's side of a tow vehicle backing up, so a thief sees it straight away, and so you see it before you drive off.
Wheel lock types compared
| Type | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clamp / chock lock (e.g. Trimax TCL65) | Quick to fit, also works as a chock, adjustable span | Must match tire width; can sometimes be removed by deflating the tire on cheaper designs | Utility, boat and RV trailers in storage |
| Clamp with lug cover (e.g. Blaylock EZ-300/302) | Blocks wheel removal as well as rotation | Heavier; sized by wheel diameter | Tandem-axle trailers |
| Full wheel boot | Highly visible, covers lug nuts | Bulky and slower to fit | Long-term storage |
| Locking lug nuts | Cheap, always fitted | Only stops wheel theft, not trailer theft | Spare tire and wheel theft |
How to measure
- Read the tire size on the sidewall (for example ST205/75R15: 205 mm wide, 15 in wheel).
- Convert width to inches (205 mm is about 8.1 in) and check it falls inside the lock's span.
- Check the wheel diameter if the lock covers the rim or lugs.
- Check clearance between the tire and fender; low fenders can stop some clamp locks fitting.
Care and use
Wheel locks live outdoors, so lubricate the cylinder occasionally with a dry lock lubricant and keep the keyhole cap closed. Make a habit of removing the lock before hitching; towing with one fitted can damage the tire, fender and lock.

- Do wheel locks stop trailer theft?
- They make towing very hard and noisy, which deters most thieves. Use one together with a coupler lock.
- Which wheel do I lock on a tandem trailer?
- Any outside wheel, ideally on the visible side. Locks that also cover lug nuts stop the wheel being swapped.
- Is a wheel boot the same as a wheel lock?
- Broadly yes; boots enclose more of the wheel, clamp locks grip the tire.
- Can a wheel lock damage my tire?
- Not if fitted correctly and removed before towing. Rubber-coated arms help protect rims.
